- William G. Hughes died on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Arden Courts Assisted Living in Naples, FL. He was born Nov. 17, 1912 in Menomonie, WI, the son of Mae (Graeser) and John L. Hughes. In 1920 he moved to St. Paul, MN where he attended school and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1935 he attended graduate school at the U. of M. and met his future wife at a school dance. He married Selma A. Sundquist in 1937.
During WW II, he served his country as a civilian working in Washington, D.C. for the War Production Board which facilitated the production of penicillin and synthetic rubber. After the War he moved to Plainfield, NJ where he lived in the same house for over fifty years and worked as a chief chemical engineer.
William was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Plainfield serving as elder, church president, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Lutheran Layman's League for about 50 years. He continued to be active in the Lutheran church in Lakewood and attended the Marco Lutheran Church when he spent several months on Marco in the winters.
William was an avid golfer, his foursome winning a public golf courses senior league championship. In 1994 he moved with Selma to Leisure Village in Lakewood, NJ; they celebrated their 62nd wedding in April 1999; Selma died in Dec. 1999. He loved dancing and often danced five days a week in the "Village" in Lakewood. William also hunted, fished and golfed all through his youth, then with his children and later his grandsons.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Grace Abreu and Mary Ellen (Maurice) Godsey, one brother John G. Hughes and sister-in-law Elizabeth Hughes.
Surviving family include son, William J. (Peggy) Hughes and daughter, Andrea K. (the late Dr. James) Battaglia, both of Marco Island, FL; son, Steven (Lauren) Hughes, Gonvick, MN; 6 grandchildren: Lt. Col Karl R. Trenker (Debbie) Trenker, S. Korea; Gary C. "Rusty" (Tricia) Trenker of West Chester, OH; and Nancy (Philip) Tedesco of Bonny Doon, CA; Kerry (John) Olson, St. Michael, MN; Shannon (Dan) Alto, Bemidji, MN; and Benjamin Hughes, Gonvick, MN. 14 great grandchildren: Brittany Trenker, Shawn Trenker, Timmy Trenker, Kristopher Trenker, Thomas Trenker, Taylor Tedesco, Bronwen Tedesco, Riley William Trenker, Casey James Trenker, Zander Hughes Trenker, Zachary Olson, Nicholas Olson, Katie Alto, and Nate Alto; plus nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
